residency @sandø – a dynamic and experimental residency for visual artists, set in our café and exhibition space.

INFO

The residency program invites selected artists to occupy the café as an open studio – a place where art arises in the present and the space becomes an active participant in the artistic process. Guests in the café can become part of the work as the artist lets their gaze and pencil capture the changing and moving motifs. Objects and people in the space are included as tableaus in a site-specific universe, where the artist's line tells stories in real time.

The residency format functions as both a workspace and an exhibition space. The artist's works – include both works from the archive and new works created on site – are exhibited continuously and are available to the public throughout the stay. The open studio thus invites visitors into live artistic practice, where the public has the opportunity to experience the process behind the work and enter into a dialogue with the artist.

As part of the stay, one work is selected, which is produced in a limited, signed edition – a so-called multiple.

Multiples are a democratic art form with historical roots in the idealism of the 1960s, where the idea was that everyone should have access to original art at affordable prices. Great artists such as Joseph Beuys, Jenny Holzer, Keith Haring and Mike Kelley have all worked with this format. Today, multiples form an important part of collections around the world – including at MoMA in New York – it ranges from handmade objects to artistic prints, vinyl records and DVDs.

Residency @Sandø is not just a residency – it is an experience. A creative community where artist and audience merge in a lively exchange of impressions, inspiration and artistic energy.

Welcome to Foyer Contemporary's new format – a space for presence, curiosity and art in motion.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

jasper sebastian stürup’s work explores figuration and the everyday in life – the personal, coupled with his surroundings and continuing fascinations. spanning drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, and artist’s books, his oeuvre emphasizes the sensitivity of the drawn line as a central aspect of his practice. his imagery, composed of fragile, reduced lines, depicts figures from his own sphere along with music, art, avantgarde film and poetry. figures appear alongside myriad objects and flora and fauna, derived from both life and his library of images. as curator christoph tannert writes, “stürup’s drawings are connected in a liberating and labyrinthine way, sophisticated as well as punk-primitive—as radical as they are simple. there has rarely been anything as tender, as wild, as bold and as dark, but also as carefree and bright in drawing.”

jasper sebastian stürup (frederiksberg, 1969) lives and works in copenhagen. he received his bachelor of fine arts (ba) and master of fine arts (mfa) from the royal danish academy of fine arts, copenhagen (1999).
